The Chozuya, the purification fountain, at the entrance to Naritasan Shinsoji Buddhist Temple in Narita, Chiba, Japan. This Chozuya is particularly beautiful with an ornate dragon sculpture breathing the purifying water into the basin. Tradition dictates a specific form of purifying yourself through ritual hand washing and the rinsing of your mouth before entering the temple, and so you see the wooden scoops entering and leaving the Chozuya as various visitors practice the Chozu, or purification ritual. This temple has stood on these grounds since 940AD. It is amazing to think over the generations of Buddhists and visitors alike who have taken part in this sacred practice.
